Nativity Scenes at Jasna Gora

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head

The tradition of displaying Nativity scenes during the Christmas season, dating back to St. Francis of Assisi and so widespread in the Christian world, has well settled in the Polish culture. It is also preserved and cherished here at Jasna Góra with as many as three exhibitions representing the birth of Jesus Our Lord and Saviour.

The main nativity scene is located in front of the monumental Basilica and it is there where the statue of Infant Jesus is placed after the Midnight Mass. Another creche is inside the Basilica, while outdoors down in the dry moats surrounding the Jasna Góra Sanctuary, an impressive movable nativity scene with animals and over 300 movable figures attracts pilgrims, especially children.

The Nativity scenes can be visited from the Christmas Day after the Midnight Mass until the last weekend before Ash Wednesday. The person responsible for their construction is Fr. Bronisław Kraszewski, the decorator at the Jasna Góra Sanctuary.

Opening hours from December 25: Monday-Friday: 9am-6pm;
                                              weekends and public holidays: 9am-8pm

All Jasna Góra visitors and pilgrims are welcome and invited to stop by Our Lord's creche to maditate on the mystery of Incarnation and God's presence among us.

Blessed Christmas!
